Description
Urban fantasy is a subgenre of fantasy where the narrative incorporates supernatural elements within a 19th- to 21st-century (or equivalent) urban society. It typically takes place in the present day (or its equivalent).
Urban fantasy works may be set in an approximation of our world where the fantastic exists secretly, or in a world (such as an alternate history) where it occurs openly, or a blend of both. Elements like magic, paranormal beings, other worlds, and so forth may exist. Common themes include coexistence or conflict between humans and other beings, with the changes brought by such characters and events to local life serving as the main driving force.
Many authors, publishers, and readers distinguish urban fantasy from paranormal romance, which uses similar characters and settings but focuses on romantic relationships between characters.
